My brother wants to go back to repeat his leaving certificate as he failed maths, and he had a meeting with the school today, and he thinks that they are not going to allow him back. We have another meeting on Friday with the principal, vice principal and year head.

If he is ultimately refused to allow resit his exams in the school, can we go further about it?

He didn`t do Transition Year, if that helps...

Genuine replies only please. Thanks

Why does he think the school will not allow him to re-sit the LC? Can he afford one of the private schools?

No. Private schools are out of the question, i`m afraid. I`m a full time student, and my mother is keeping me as it is...

In the interview they put a very negative spin on things. They asked him about his points, and they asked him had he a plan for next year. Apparently the principal did all the talking and the other 2 kept quiet. There`s about 11 looking to repeat. The others are prob Senior Cup players, or just didn`t get the points they needed.

Do i have another avenue to go down if they refuse to let him in. I`m attending the meeting friday and want to be preared for what they`re going to throw at me.

If he is ultimately refused, telephone the Dept. of Education and ask them their advice.

Don`t. They don`t give a fcuk and are worse than useless.

Ask to see the school`s policy on Leaving Certificate repeat students.

I gather from your initial posts that others wish to repeat. If even one of them is accepted there has to be a set of criteria IN WRITING as to who is and is not acceptable  .

Having said that if they do have criteria then there`s actually not a lot you can do if your brother does not fulfill one, more or all of them and sometimes they can be judgement calls as opposed to hard and fast facts.

If they don`t accept him there should be a repeat leaving cert college somewhere in Limerick that is public and should be able to offer him the course in maths for three to four hundred euro. Your local VEC should be able to help you out.

Its usual the practice to allow a repeat if a student has not done the Transition Year but for some if they have done Transition they can`t repeat tin the same school.

In any case if he dosent get in you are already helping to build up a life long grievance seeing as he is not a Senior Cup player.

Might be wrong here but I think the Dept. capatation grant is limited to six years per pupil . . . so if you have done transition the school won`t get a capitation grant for your repeat  (i.e. 7th )  year.

Tell him to look up www.studentxpress.ie for past papers and answers.

Then he should pass maths, whatever else he does.

Would a kick in the bottom of the curve help as well, I have to ask?

Most VEC`s offer Leaving Cert repeats, probably better he doesn`t go back to the school. I think you will find his current school for repeat students can probably cherry pick from them hence the "interview".
