ÉIRE Óg’s quest for senior honours ended in ignominy and disgrace in Dr. Cullen Park on Sunday evening.

In an extraordinary few minutes inter-county player Eric McCormack appeared to make an attempt to head butt sideline official Martin Murphy and then, having being red carded by Pat Kehoe, raised his hands to the official once more.

It was almost the last act of the game and immediately afterwards a number of Éire Óg panel members wrestled with each other while select or Jimmy Dooley was verbally abused by one of his own players.

It was bizarre. There hadn’t been a hint of rancour up to this. Long afterwards with Dr Cullen Park almost deserted Dooley faced up to the bitter facts.

“We obviously had a problem with discipline and we let ourselves down on the night,” he said.

“I wouldn’t focus on one individual because as a club we would all be disappointed. We would have let each other down and let football down in general at the end. Our discipline failed and we all have to take responsibility for that.”

His words will not go down well over in Teach Asca but it was apparent to all that the kingpins of Carlow football have fallen from grace. Dooley didn’t want to dwell on specific incidents.

“As a club we would be very disappointed about tonight. The last few minutes, I wouldn’t like to focus too much upon them. What happened say with the linesman I don’t think Eric hit him or anything.

“Players shouldn’t be getting involved with linemen at any level. Verbally or anything else. He got involved and he shouldn’t have got involved,” he stated.

Dooley was remorseful afterwards.

“We have to call a spade a spade. We have a lot of hard work to do. We have to pull together and face up to facts that we left ourselves down.”

A player allegedly striking an official and teammates fighting amongst themselves on the pitch are certainly not your ordinary run of the mill club dust up.

WICKLOW are the latest county board who will have to investigate an assault on a referee after one of their match officials was struck by an umbrella.

Referee Pat Dunne was hit, allegedly by an Enniskerry supporter, after Enniskerry had beaten Blessington by 3-6 to 1-9 in a Junior A football championship game in Laragh last weekend.

After the game, the referee was returning to the dressing-room and had just taken out his notebook to make some notes when the assault occurred.

The notebook was knocked from his grasp when he was struck on the back of both hands by an umbrella, and he suffered some bruising to his knuckles.

It is understood that he will include full details of the incident in his match report, meaning the Wicklow Competitions Control Committee will investigate it fully.

There was a brief scuffle five minutes from the end of the game, which resulted in an Enniskerry player being sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

More shameful Gah carry on reported in today`s papers

_____________________________

THE Dublin county board will investigate claims that a football referee was verbally abused and spat at during angry scenes following a club championship match on Wednesday night.

Trouble erupted after St Peregrine`s overhauled St Anne`s, 1-10 to 0-12, courtesy of a last-gasp penalty that decided their Evening Herald Dublin SFC clash at Newcastle.

Dublin GAA chairman Gerry Harrington has promised that the county board`s CCC "will invesitigate any breach of rule or indiscipline by any member of the GAA" upon receipt of the report of match referee Philip Fitzsimons.

"I do understand there were some unsavoury incidents after the game," Harrington told the Herald. "I do understand that the referee was verbally abused and was spat at.

"You can take it that the CCC will investigate the incidents, and any breach of rule or indiscipline will be dealt with severely.

"We in Dublin will not allow incidents like that to tarnish our games and we will deal with them severely, believe you me," the Dublin chief concluded.

St Peregrine`s booked their place in the next round, against UCD in O`Toole Park next Sunday, after Stuart Lowndes converted the all-important penalty deep in stoppage time.

However bad any of the GAA violence is, it is pale in comparison to this snippet from the garrison game. If the fella in the orange bib did what he did at 2:34 in the street he`d be put in jail for over 5 years.

Still a kick in the head though. In my opinion to kick a fella on the ground is the lowest form of cowardly act anyone could do, let alone someone who kicks someone on the ground in the head.

Not being funny or smart here, but has there ever been a case of a referee in GAA retaliating and defending himself. Say a ref, who gets a few digs thrown at him. Has there ever been a case where he hit back and laid out the player..
Any of ye ever witnessed this? I`d say it would be some shock to a player who abused a ref to get it back at him...

No naming names! No need to post soccer links,as I have seen plenty of them.

A fella I know was removed from refereeing for headbutting an abusive select or/supporter after a game. He now is a manager!

Was at a game recently where a young fellow ended up in hospital for three days.

Was hit full whack with the hurley/hurl across the head, off the ball. Was wearing a helmet but if it got the heal of the hurley/hurl instead of the flat he would be dead. Fractured a bone behind his ear and he could not hold his balance at all afterwards. Culprit didnt get booked even though no one can comprehend how the two upmires  (both neutrals )  didn see the assault. Afterwards the culprit himself knew what he had done  (but didn admit it )

Question is What sort of come back has this fellow if no one seen it. Only the corner forward said he could hear the bang and then seen the fellow hit the ground.

The gardai were involved but as far as i`m aware they told the family that they have no chance of anything happening if no one witnessed the incident.

All hell broke loose at the end of what had been a competitive, but clean clash in Pearses Park, Arklow between Glenealy and Bray Emmetts on Saturday.

A late pull by a Bray Emmetts player on a Glenealy man sparked a mass ruckus as players from both sides got involved.

As the referee tried to regain control, the fighting then spread to the sideline, with officials in both dug-outs getting involved.

Glenealy won the game comfortably, 2-19 to 0-8, with Leighton Glynn bagging nine points for the victors.

Stand up and fight until you hear the bell
Stand toe to toe, trade blow for blow
Keep punching until you make your punches tell
Show that crowd watcher know!
Until you hear that bell, that final bell
Stand up and fight like hell!

Don`t see the irony there chief?!

I don`t understand the topic title. Surely this is, if anything, a new high in "Gah violence"? A low would be, say, someone gently flicking their man`s ear.
