As the title says I have just picked up my new car from the garage. Transferred over insurance etc. Left the garage for the drive back to work. To cut a long story short, the garage did not put any diesel in the car  (not even enough to get me back to work )  and there are no mat`s in the car. Is that standard practice??

I presumed I would get half a tank of diesel or there abouts and I also presumed mats would be supplied with the car.

Was I stupid to presume or should I get back onto the garage??

There`s probably not a lot you can do. I`d be inclined to haggle and always finish with `leave a drop  of diesel in it for me and you have a deal`... no mats though? jeez that is pretty damn scabby!! no chance they threw them in the boot while they hoovered out or something?

I think so, yeah, but you should have checked it before you left. The da bought a brand new car once, and your man said he.d have a full tank in it when he came to pick it up.
Well, when the father went up to Portumna to get it, the tank was no where near full, and the salesman was disputing it. The da said he`d leave the car in the yard, and sale was off unless he got a full tank....

you may as well go back and kick up some fuss.....

Looking back I should have checked before I left the garage. I made no reference to getting the tank filled etc but I presumed as a gesture of goodwill that there would be some in it. Its about 20 miles from Ennis to where I work and I had to stop on the way from the garage as the light had come on.

The mats is another story altogether. I presumed that a car would automatically come with mats. Surly they are standard.

I rang the garage and asked to speak to the sales guy I have been dealing with. He wasnt available but rang me back and asked was all ok. I explained the situation and he told me that mats are not supplied as standard as they dont come from the manufacturer. I told him that a set of mats wouldnt set the garage back a whole pile especially considering the car I bought was not cheap. He then went on to tell me that they have a set of mats available for my car and i can have them for the lovely price tag of €70

jaysus, those salesmen will always be salesmen....suppose not much you can do about the diesel now, but bad form over the mats... I wouldn`t mind, but I`d say dealers are mad for the business. It must have been the drunk salesman I came across in knoxs on Sunday night! He must have been drinking your diesel money....

70 quid? hope you told em where he could put them. Keep an eye out in Lidl. They`re all more or less the same and you`ll pick em up for 15-20 quid.

I would kick up a bit more fuss about how you were treated. Tell them you`ll name and shame on every blog if they dont thrwo in free mats for you.

It costs them waaaaay less than 70e

well cowpat the salesman was falling all over me up until I drove the car out of the garage. ringing all the time, always available when I rang etc etc. seemed like he couldnt do enough. i think i met that same salesman in ennis on sunday night, he wasnt the guy I was dealing with though : )

well the actual mats for €70 are volkswagen ones so I presume that is why they are €70. Only difference in them to normal non dealer specific ones are that they have the VW logo on them. I told him I wouldnt be purchasing them and his reply was - you need mats in the car esp the front coz the carpet will wear something terrible and de value the car. will pick up a set in halfords at the weekend altogether.

other then that though loving the new car. first brand new car i have ever bought. proud moment for me.....

yeah, I worked with a lot of salesmen before, and they are mad. I dunno are they just like that anyway regardless of whether they worked in sales or not.....

Were there two guys playing music in Knox`s on Sunday?? What time were they there coz I dont think they were there when I was there. If they were then I would have to say I didnt notice them.

I dont know any salesmen. Have never had to deal with one before. But based on the guy that sold me my car and the random guy I met in Ennis at the weekend I would agree with you that they are not 100% sane. I suppose part of their job is to talk to talk, make you think you`re getting the best deal ever and then make the sale. They dont make much money otherwise.

Ah go away, I was in Knox`s early enough on Sunday so you might not have even started yet. If I had known I would have paid more attention. There are some awful ape`s in there most nights but Sunday was exceptionally bad because an awful lot of people were out all day etc etc.

So, what is the name of the band?

Once when I changed car, I got into the new car and like yourself was surprised to see there were no car mats. As I drove away my old car was parked on the roadside outside the garage. Luckily it was unlocked so I opened the door and whipped out my old mats and took them home with me!!

i was gone from knox`s by the time you started so i cant say whether you were good or not. everywhere in ennis was packed on sunday night.

well robbing my own mats would be a good idea coz i have VW mats in that. wonder if i rang tomorrow and asked for them back what response would i get. i reckon they would prob say no.

i guess its into halford`s for me and just buy a set of mats.

Penny - was the car brand new or second-hand. If new, was it from a main dealer, and, if so, phone the manager/owner and tell him your story about the mats. Talk nice and keep calm. Let him know that you expected the mats to be supplied with the car - tell him what you paid for it - and say to him you would be very grateful if he could do anything for you.

imleach1, it was brand new just out of the box and i bought it from a main dealer. i had to order it because it wasnt in stock and i was waiting nearly 6 weeks for it. i will ring back tomorrow and see if i can get any joy from them. i know a set of mats isnt a big deal but the car was far from cheap and to be honest i expected there to be mats in it. i spent enough, didnt think id have to go out at the weekend and spend more, even if it is only 30/40 euro

Penny, it`s perfectly simple, your car should have come with mats. There is no way in hell you should be let out of a garage without car mats in a brand new car. May I ask what make it is? The best solution is to tell them if you don`t get mats that you`re ringing their head office in Ireland to complain i.e Toyota Ireland, or Opel Ireland or whomever. That`ll smarten their step. Or if you`re sick of talking to them just by-pass them and ring head office now and tell them your story.

I`m reading your posts in shock. Your salesman probably whipped them out and gave them to a buddy or for his own motor. It`s incredible that mats don`t come as standard, I`ve never heard the likes of it.

Id say they ll tell you mats dont come as standard even in new cars and that they re an extra you ll have to pay for. Bad form if the garage dont throw them in for free. I doubt too many new cars are leaving their showroom..

Id love to know what make of car it is Galway Bay. I know my motor has those little plastic upstands that the mats clip into so if there were no mats the upstands would look stupid and it would be obvious they were missing. To me its like saying you have to pay extra for the car company logo on the front of the car. It should just be part or the car like the tools in the boot.

Holy crap, VW? really? Now I`m defo shocked.

No disrespect to other motors but I would have thought VW were better than that and it makes me even more positive that mats should be standard or at least standard practice to hold them back as supposed extras but then "throw in" to make themselves look like great fellas. Incredible.

Jimmy, i bought a VW from a VW dealer. I had a Golf to begin with and bought a new Golf - changed engine, spec etc. Those little clip things are in the car on both drivers and passenger`s side and no mats. I rang the dealer as soon as I got back to work, maybe 30 mins after collecting the car and he told me that VW mats are not standard and that he has a set in the garage and i can have them for €70. I told him there is no way Im giving €70 for a set of VW mats on top of what I paid for the car.

I rang back today and asked to speak to the salesman I was dealing with, he was with someone and would ring me back. I rang again an hour later and the same story. In the 3 times I was in the garage sorting out my own car and collecting same I have only ever encountered 1 other person in the show room. Anyway I got bored of ringing and getting no joy so I asked to speak to the Manager. He was available, I told him my story and he said that the VW mats are not standard and they are €70 per set. I checked the VW website and they are on that for €49 + vat  (would that bring the value to €70?? ) . I asked about the clips in the front of the car and I was told they are there to hold the mats in place should you decide to buy them.

So basically after spending €30,000 + on the car they are not budging on the mat issue

Its bad taste alright Penny, unfortunately depending on the make of the car, car mats, mud flaps, etc amongst other extras are not standard when a car is delivered. You would have had to ask for these to be thrown in by the garage themselves as part of the sale when making the bargain, but most people dont think of this until they are actually driving the car and notice the extras missing.

You dont really have a leg to stand on as the deal has been struck but you can appeal to the humane side of the salesman and/or manager, but that is probably best done in person rather than over the phone..... of course times are tough nowadays and penny pinching is a way of life for some of these businesses so I wouldn`t expect anything at this stage.

I would visit the garage however and speak to the salesman in question, make the appeal, speak to the manager if necessary. then when its heading nowhere drop  the hint that their business will suffer to the tune of more than 70 bucks when word gets out on anfearrua about the way you were treated.  (You may be amazed at the clout afr has! )
You are not alone on this website when it comes to bad experiences with this particular garage......and if it all comes to nought you may as well name and shame them and see all the stories that come out about them.

Best of luck......
