Just look at it lads. Alltogether 11 u21`s on the panel and by 9pm tomorrow night, they could have their second AI medal in a week. We should be absolutely ashamed of ourselves. 3 titles in a row and we couldn`t even win a league title out of it. We`re all to blame, management, county board, players and us for being stupid enough to spend our hard earned money following them. We have no chance of reaching the standard set last Sunday. I hope they bring the cup up around Birdhill or Emily because that`s as close to Limerick as it`s going to get

Mike I would not be so hard on yourselves as all that. The key difference between this group of players and the Limerick U21 3 in a row team is that they won back to back all ireland minor medals while the limerick lads didnt even win a munster at minor level. I would hold far more stock in a winning minor team than a winning U21 team. This seems to hold true for Tipp as their last AI winning team in 2001 was backboned by the minors of 1996.

Also, Brendan & Padraic Maher and Noel Mcgrath will, i have no doubt, turn out to be among the best players to ever wear a Tipp shirt in the modern era. There was no player on the Limerick U21 teams to come near them.

Look at the great `Limerick Tipp trilogy`, we came out the better of that but how have we progressed in comparrison to Tipp???!! They`re going away winning all irelands while the Limerick county board and the panel is still knee deep in the politics is was in 10 years ago. Sick to the teeth of it!

Whatever way you look at it , it was a a terrible waste on Limerick`s behalf , at the very least a Munster title or a league should have been delivered and in all honestly a senior AI should not have been out of the question.

Tipp were lucky in that the county board seen the young talent coming and moved to ensure the best set up was going to be in place when they arrived on the senior scene.

People were begining to start making jokes about Sheedy and his laptop and modern methods.

There was an article written last week about all the hi tech stuff Sheedy was doing with match trackers and embedded senors in training gear etc and compared it to the perceived simple way KK were doing things , it was written as a bit of a sneer on Sheedy as the writer was obviously expecting KK to roll over Tipp. But the very young players respond to these methods and feel very comfortable  in that environment.

Time to build a bridge and get over it with regard to the three in a row. Those guys are history now, time to look forward..

Who ever takes over better get up to date with the IT methods  (taping performances )  of improving players game techniques.

IMHO the Limerick players dont want to have their performance taped!!!!!!!

Bottom line is that a big name forward from the east was taken aside during justins time as a manager. His failings as a forward were pointed out to him. I believe video clips were used. He sulked, but he was sulking as an under 14 player years ago and only the red carpet is good enough for him to walk on.

could you expand otb on your theory that you think winning at minor has greater significence for senior than u-21. would have thought the other way round just by virtue of u21 players being older. also if you look at galway there seems to be more of a correlation between their relative success at u-21 and the famine at senior as opposed to their glittering success at minor.

congrats for last sunday by the way.

It is fairly hard to believe alright Mike, 3 U21 All-Ireland titles in a row and nothing achieved at senior level in the years that followed. It seemed at the time that it was only a matter of time before Limerick made the break through at senior level. But I suppose therein lies the problem - it seems the players themselves thought it was going to happen automatically.

I must say that while there were undoubtedly some very talented players on those teams, I always thought that O`Shaughnessy was the only really top quality forward between the 3 teams. I`d have expected that winning 3 U21 titles in a row would provide the forwards that Limerick have lacked. Just an opinion.

Limerick hurlin needs its men to stand up and be counted.

Real men wouldn`t stand to one side and let what is happening happen.

Courage is needed.

Who will stand up and be counted?

Who will hide?

Limerick blew it alright but surely the underage structures that brought about those teams can be replicated for future chance?
That said the skullduggery in their county board would scupper everyting all over again.
They sacked Dave Keane very quickly a few years ago. The players werent diciplined enough at the same time. A lot of factors seemed to be involved.

I think you make a very relevant point there about Shocks, Déise. The 3 in a row teams were made up of what Dunphy might call good players - not great players but good players. The team as a whole was greater than the sum of its parts, they had a never say die spirit, good work ethic and a clever manager. And they were lucky enough to come through some of their games - against Tipp in particular.
Most of the players would not make an indelible impression if picked for a lot of senior inter county teams however and so it proved when picked for the Limerick senior team. They were good as a unit but individual players didn`t have that something special to make them worthy members of an AI winning senior team. Another thing is that a lot of the stylists were a bit on the small side physically and senior intercounty hurling depends a hell of a lot on the size and speed combination these days, along with skill of course. They gave us three great years at u-21 level and I for one am very grateful to them - they gave GAA people in Limerick a lift when we badly needed it and such lifts have been few and far between in our county over the decades. I`m not ignoring that there was a certain disciplinary problem but I think it wasn`t as bad as some hurlers on the ditch like to depict it. Either way, those days are behind us and those players are nearing the end of their intercounty careers now. We can continue to slag and backbite and yearn for success that didn`t come our way or we can try to get the best out of the remaining years that are left to those that still have something to offer us at senior intercounty level.

Finally, sometimes an underage team that doesn``t have much success but has one or two exceptional hurlers can contribute more to a successful senior set up in the long run than a team of fairly good hurlers who gel together underage and get a bit of luck and a taste of success and confidence to carry them through to underage glory.

Sa Bhaile, that it the best summation I have read of the 21 teams we had. I have always maintained that they were a TEAM with huge team spirit and real leaders among them with not very many individual exceptionallly talented hurlers with the exception of Shocks. They worked well together, were very united and Dave Keane got the best out of them. They gave us 3 great years and like yourself I am very grateful for the lift that Limerick hurling badly needed.
