I live in a 4th floor top floor appartment. I was niave enough 2 think that this made me safe from mice until I found one mooching around in papers near me bed in the early hours on sunday morning. In the chase that ensued he escaped into a mess of old clothes, at the end of the room.
I have since heard scratches in the attic and noted some gaps in the walls in the hotpress where pipes from the water cyclinder enter the walls.I suspect that this is where they enter me flat and then escape off into the walls\attic through the gaps in the walls.
I have set a few traps in the hotpress, bedroom under the sink and bedroom. Didnt get as far as the attic yet. i have a few of them plug in things that send out a signal that is meant to scatter the little -ers but i havent used them yet as i want a go at catching a few of em.
i invested 50 euro in traps, devices today. I rang rentokil who said they would threat the attic and appartment and sort it all out for €170. I am happy enough to have a go off it myself.
How are the rest getting on with the old mice??

We are in the 3rd floor of a new complex and we had them there up to 3 months ago. The place was infested with them. The only way we sorted our place was to seal every hole they could come in. There`s a lad down the corridor and he has 2 sort of vicous dogs and they have a field day down there but they`re no good at catching the mice. They bark like mad and they`d wake Methusella but they`re no good to catch them. A 4th floor apartment is too high up for a cat as well. Someone told my Mrs there lately that if you get a figurine of a cat and leave it sitting in the kitchen, they wont go near the place.

Yes, and if you`re bald just get a tattoo of a spider on your noggin and it will keep the flies off you.

I d say a new appartment complex would be even more vulnerable. They d be around from the building of the place. I doubt the figurine of the cat thing works!!! I was thinking of borrowing a cat if a few other measures dont work!!!
I have a few holes to seal up but i ll leave the holes open a day or 2 in the hope that i can catch a few of them in me traps.
In many ways is an appartment complex an ideal location from them. The appartments are all linked through plumbing\services etc and they nip in and out of individual appartments and live between the walls.

I caught one in one of those plastic humane traps there one Sunday morning. Well if truth be told I came home Saturday night from the opub scuttered and the mouse was already caught in the trap and gone in behind the television and I could hear all this rattling but I was so drubnk it never dawned on me that a mouse was caught in a trap. The following morning the Mrs came up to make a bottle for the young lad and came flying back down to tell me there was a mouse caught. So I got up and put him into a shoe box and brought him outside. But I didn`t have the heart to kill him and I just let him off.

I had no idea he was inside in the trap. All I could hear was noise and even though i went over to investigate, I saw no mouse, I was loaded drunk, it never dawned on me that there could be a mouse even though i`d set the traps a few hours earlier. When I was summoned in the morning, I found the poor creatur with one of his hind legs caught in the trap. The trap was stuck inside in a clump of wires and he had it dragged from the washing machine over and in behind the television. I couldn`t bring myself to kill him after it, not if he bit me would I kill him.

if you have no problem with mice and then start to hear scratching in the attic and mice appear the possibilty is that you have rats in the attic.
unless you have a ton of mice you generally wont hear them.
rats hunt mice so their arrival drives mice out into areas where they wouldnt normally be seen at times they dont like.
incidentally rats do not come in to houses looking for food, they are generally only looking for shelter to nest.
dont screw around with mouse traps get rentokill in there and be done with it particularly if like east you have small kids

Read that out to the Mrs last night and she started laughing. The she pointed out that the figurine of the cat isn`t meant to scare off mice at all but pigeons and you have to leave it in the back yard or garden.

Dya know ES, when we were lads, a friend got rats in his garage. We went to get a trap and were sold this "humane" trap which invoved smearing a paste on a board with some grub in the middle. The mice and rats were supposed to get stuck and you could take them down the road and let them off in the bushes. We put it down and the next day the body of a rat was stuck in the middle, but the poor f3cker had chewed off three of his legs to get out, they were still planted beside him. Never forgot it.

Maybe if you picked up the newspapers and the dirty clothes they might stay away...they are attracted to dirt!!

Our garage was invested with them back in the summer, I put out some trays with the poison pellets on them. Around a week later I found half a dozen of them spark out on the garage floor. Then a couple more were stumbling around and couple of days later so I took a spade out and wacked them with it. Job done.
They are disgusting fcuckers though, I have cardboard laid on the concrete at the end they were coming into the garage. The amount of urine left by them is a health hazard.

jez twice I dont like your theory.
sharing me habitat with a few mice for a short period doesnt bother me hugely. But rats - that does freak me out to be honest.
Me traps are down 24 hours and no success to date.
I though about rentokil alright but was too mean to pay the €170. I hope it doesnt turn out to be a false economy!!
