Not So ‘Sporting’ Limerick?
Limerick GAA have gone against the grain by voting against any change in the much talked about Rule 42 relating to opening up Croke Park to other codes. It’s ironic that this should take place in a week in which the launch of the ‘Sporting Limerick’ slogan took place. The following is the definition of Sporting Limerick as appeared in a match programme this weekend. Draw your own conclusions in relation to the Gaelic Grounds.
Sporting Limerick is a simple message that captures the passion, pride and participation of Limerick people, both city and county, across all sporting codes. It aims to utilise the existing culture of sporting excellence and commitment to create a defining and lasting brand that will be recognised throughout the country and throughout the world.
From Rathkeale to Raheen, from Southill to South Liberties, a love affair with sport is what unites and defines the people of Limerick. From a junior B hurling match in Feenagh to a fourball in Limerick county, the rugby’s charity cup, to an FAI Junior Cup game at the Boro, the people of Limerick will administrate, participate in and support their chosen sport with a fervour unique to the world over.
From rower Sam Lynch, to runner Rosemary Ryan, to boxer Andy Lee not to mention the hundreds of stars of football, hurling, rugby, horse racing, special olympics and soccer that excel at the highest level, Limerick’s people will cross sporting boundaries and support their own. It is this unique, across-all-sports, support that sets Limerick apart from anywhere else.
The sporting Limerick brand is a private-led initiative that provides the opportunity to promote Limerick’s word class facilities, Limerick as a sports destination and promote more participation in sport. The Sporting Limerick logo will be made available to all interested parties who wish to support this positive message that encapsulates the sporting current that flows through Limericks veins.
The dedication of Limerick people to running, participating in and supporting numerous sporting codes, the state of the art sporting facilities across city and county, the undoubted success of Limericks sporting representatives and the unique match day experience are natural assets that all people of Limerick can be proud of. In encouraging the private and public sectors, the media, sporting organisations and the public to support and carry this message it is envisaged that Sporting Limerick will become as recognisable as existing brands that draw on their greatest natural assets such as Sunny South East or Yeats county.
Sporting Limerick recognises that individual sports need their own space and identity while at the same time this message embraces the heart and spirit of all Limerick sport. In addition to the slogan appearing on Limerick GAA jerseys courtesy of JP McManus’s sponsorship of Limerick GAA and county teams, further details and future initiatives to promote the Sporting Limerick brand will be announced at a later date.
