Indreabhán – Fuelling the Féile Passion
Last weekend was the first time a girl’s team from Indreabhán in county Galway competed in the national handball Féile competition, and leave a mark they did. The Michéal Breathnach team played some top-class handball over the weekend, winning their group games against Clooney-Quinn (Clare) and Crinkle from Offaly.
They then went on to take the Division 2 40x20 Féile title, after a tie-breaker finish in the final. The team of Sinead Ní hAinlí, Neasa Ní Mhaoláin, Cliodhna Ní Eidhín, Ciana Ní Churraoin and Roisín Ní Chongaile lost the first game 8-21, but lifted their performance in the second taking the game 21-8 and forcing a tie-breaker. After a nail-biting exchange, the Galway girls eventually emerged winners on an 11-6 scoreline.
This was a fantastic achievement for the girls and their club, particularly considering that they made their debut at the festival this year. “It was a great achievement for the girls in their first year, and something they will look back on with great pride in years to come,” said Irish Hanball Council President, Tom Walsh. “The team played some outstanding handball over the weekend and the efforts of all the mentors in the club must be commended,” he said.
Tá tradisiúin na Liathróide Láimhe ag dul siar 100 bliain sa pharóiste seo "An Chnoic", Indreabhán, tráth go raibh pinniúir i mBoth Chuana láimh leis An Spidéal. Tógadh pinniúr eile 60x30 i lár na dtríochaidí láimh leis an Scoil Naisiúnta sna hAille. Tógadh an pinniúr 40x20 i 1980 agus tá idir óg agus aosta ag imirt ann ó shoin. Is é PJ McDonagh nó Pat na Máistreasa(1892-1961) an laoch mór áitiúil atá luaite ag Tom McElligott ina leabhar(The Story of Handball). Ta béim mhór ar an aos óg le trí bliana anuas agus bhuaigh na buachaillí "Feile na nGael" Grád 3 anuraidh, agus i mbliana, bhuaigh an foireann cailiní Grád 2 don céad uair.
